Anesthesia

The patient is given general anesthesia before the surgery, which means they will be fully asleep and won’t feel any pain during the operation.

Incision

The cardiac surgeon makes a large incision down the center of the chest, usually by dividing the breastbone. This allows direct access to the heart and aorta so the surgeon can see and work on them clearly.

Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB)

The patient is connected to a heart-lung machine during the surgery. This machine temporarily takes over the job of the heart and lungs, so the surgeon can safely work on the heart without blood flowing through it.

Aortic root removal

The surgeon removes the damaged section of the aorta, along with the aortic valve and any parts that are weak or swollen. This often includes separating the coronary arteries and removing the aortic valve.

Replacement of the aortic valve

A new valve is then placed to replace the damaged aortic valve. It can be either a mechanical valve (made of metal) or a biological one (usually from a pig or cow and treated to work safely in the body). The new valve is carefully stitched into place.

Aortic graft placement

The damaged part of the aorta is replaced with an artificial tube, usually made from a strong material called Dacron. The new valve is stitched to this tube, and the coronary arteries, which were separated earlier, are reattached so they continue to get proper blood flow.

Closure
